Apple's motto about their new computer is "Light. Years Ahead." But is it really?
Looking at its processing power, the base model has only 1.1GHz and by paying $300 more, you can get 1.2GHz. For $1,299.99/$1,599.99, this really isn't impressive. GHz is how fast your computer runs, and these stats aren't too impressive.
To give you some perspective - A Google Chromebook Pixel going for $400 has 1.8 GHz and the 2015 Macbook Pro going for $1,299.99 has 2.7GHz. Not very impressive.
Apple also brought in a new keyboard. I tested out both of the keyboards, and for the people who are used to the old Apple keyboards, the new ones are hard to type on. They don't really give you the sensation of "typing". I don't know if that makes sense, but I prefer the old keyboard.
Apple also highlights their new Force Touch mechanism. You can now use different functions with one click (renaming files, previewing suspicious links, previewing upcoming calendar events, checking definitions, etc.). Not life-changing but definitely a nice touch. (See what I did there?)
The Macbook also comes with features like a Retina screen and can connect to your Apple phone's personal hotspot as well (which also comes with the 2015 model, though).
Remember the recent Apple controversy about removing the headphone jack from the iPhone 7? Well, there's another controversy about Apple removing ports.
[AFTER THE JUMP: The removed port, more features and functions and the review]
The port Apple removed was the USB port. Use your USB-B no longer. Apple only supports the thin USB-C now.
You have to wonder, will Apple keep sacrificing ports that people need to make their devices smaller and thinner? Now you can't charge your iPhone from your laptop. Of course, that will mean new chargers as well.
The battery isn't much better than previous models. In fact, for the same price, the MacBook Pro (early 2015) for the same price holds up to 2 more hours of battery life.
In review, the Macbook is beautifully designed. However, it falls short in many ways. The new 2016 Macbook is an attempt by Apple to sell art, not a computer. It's thin, light and powerful for its size. But the familiar keyboard has been removed in order to make the computer thinner and the USB ports have been removed. However, if you want a better, functional computer with far better stats, you should look to the 2015 Macbook Pro or look elsewhere. I wouldn't buy the Macbook unless you want a modern work of art. Otherwise, pass on it.
What do you think? Would you buy the Macbook? Comment in the comments section below!
